Peace in the Park After Dark

Peace in the Park After DarkOn Fri-Sat, Aug 26-27th 2011 from 5:00pm until 8:00am, Commander Eddie T. Johnson and the 6th District CAPS office hosted their second overnight youth camping event at Cole Park, located at 85th & King Drive. They are anticipating that 100 children between the ages of 11-18 will participate this year.

Our aim is to provide an open air environment for outdoor camping experience, mentoring and the promotion of safe use of the park through exciting activities and play as Officer Thomas Wortham IV envisioned. Officer Wortham was a reservist, worked as a Chicago Police Officer and was President of the Cole Park Advisory Council before he was killed during a robbery as he left his parent's home at the edge of the park.

This will be the first camping experience for many of the children. Our goal is to provide an alternative to joining street gangs by offering adolescents an opportunity to join a positive organization such as the 6th District Explorer Youth Program.
